For mouth herpes, I'd have it swabbed and tested as to the type. I got oral herpes 2 on an initial herpes outbreak vaginally at the same time. Then three months later, at my insistence, the doctor tested my throat and it was found to be a herpes 2 outbreak. This was despite my being told by an ENT and general Dr. that it wasn't herpes. I insisted on the test and my suspicions were confirmed. Herpes can mascarade as some similar stuff.

You are not helping yourself or your partner by staying ignorant or hoping for good luck. Genital herpes and oral herpes are two separate infections. HSV-1- is usually oral and HSV-2 is often found genitally. Both strains of herpes could spread orally and/or genitally. In order to catch oral herpes you would have to come in direct oral contact with the virus. You could catch oral herpes by kissing a partner who has the virus or performing oral sex on a person who carries the virus.
