In my microbiology training 30 years ago we were taught that herpes 1 was oral and 2 was genital, but due to "changing sexual practices" (i.e. more oral sex going on), that distinction was blurring. I don't know what the latest teaching on that is or what the biological differences between the viruses is, but I doubt if it's very significant.
